Night Kaleidoscope is the third feature from Award-Winning Director Grant McPhee, and his first foray into the horror genre. Shot in just one week on a shoestring budget, Night Kaleidoscope is a lush, visceral, visual experience that harks back to the Giallo films of the 70s with its bold colour palette.
Night Kaleidoscope is a 2017 micro-budget psychedelic vampire horror directed by Grant McPhee. It follows psychic investigator, Fion, who has been hired by the local police to track down a pair of vampires responsible for a spate of murders.
Night Kaleidoscope is set against the backdrop of Edinburgh’s decaying sink estates, however the gritty character of the city’s streets is viewed through a lens heavily influenced by Euro-trash directors like Franco and Argento and further refined through Nic Roeg’s miasmatic vision (aided by the watery quality of Scottish sunshine during the daylight hours) and then pushed to the limit of the deranged imagination of Kenneth Anger.
Grant McPhee's Night Kaleidoscope has solid visuals and frequent bursts of great cinematography, sadly this is not enough to cover up its paper thin characters and story.
‘Night Kaleidoscope’ is Alec Cheer’s totally classic-sounding synth score for a “micro-budget” psychedelic vampire horror directed by Grant McPhee and shot in Edinburgh. As ever Jonny Trunk has sniffed out another peach for his Trunk emporium, giving up very eldritch, tense and austere soundtrack that matches the film’s UK-styled parallels to Lynch or Cronenberg.
